An article is written once and then sits still. An AI reply is generated while you watch it, which changes what a read-aloud tool can do: start too early and you hear a sentence that has not finished being written. The practical habit is to let the response settle, then listen — and if you asked a follow-up, listen to that reply on its own rather than expecting one continuous stream across the whole conversation.
The second difference is mixed content. A single Gemini reply can hold prose, a code block, a table, a bulleted list and a formula. Speech is linear, so anything that depends on two-dimensional layout — a table especially — loses its meaning when it is read out in order. Selected-text reading exists for exactly this: pick the paragraphs that are prose and leave the structured parts on screen where they are readable.
Extraction depends on how the page is rendered at that moment, and chat interfaces change often. CastReader reads what is visibly rendered and offers selected-text reading as the fallback; it does not work around permissions or paywalls on any platform. Verify anything high-stakes against the text on screen rather than relying on what you heard.
